Star Wars Loading Screens
Updated: Nov 21, 2020
Little known fact about me: I am a huge Star Wars fan. I've watched ALL of the movies at least 3 times, tried to rock the Leia buns when I was little, and I own a deluxe puzzle set, one of which will be framed and hung on one of my living room walls soon, even got my father the much larger version for Father's Day this year (to be framed and hung in his man cave when we've finished putting it together). Needless to say, I was very excited to see that Sims was releasing a Star Wars game pack; I can now live out one of my greatest dreams of owning a lightsaber. But my love for this supreme cinematic series was not the main reason for me creating this pack.
Less than a week after EA announced this somewhat unexpected pack, an interview that John Boyega had done for British GQ was published. During his interview he talked about how racism has affected his life over the years, before and after his huge role in the iconic franchise, and the part that Disney played in that. He talks about how he was essentially used to market towards a broader (read: blacker) audience, but when it came down to it, his character didn't end up being as important as they made him seem and was ultimately pushed to the sidelines. He mentions that they (Disney) knew exactly what to do with their white characters, but when it came to roles held by other POC, they gave them no more significance than an amusing diversion to lessen the stress of the real action of the movies.
"What I would say to Disney is do not bring out a black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side."
- John Boyega
Many of us Black fans were so disappointed to see the treatment Boyega received in the films after seeing him on multiple promotional posters. What a joy it would have been to have seen him continue to wield that lightsaber as his own. This unmerited bias against characters went beyond just him, Boyega says; and again many fans agree. From Kelly Marie Tran's character, who was reduced to a romance plot that literally no one saw coming or understood, to Naomi Ackie, and even Oscar Isaac. To see such exceptional talent be displaced in such muted roles was dispiriting.
So in respect of John Boyega finally being able to voice the frustrations that he felt, and the melancholic feelings we were left with having watched Finn, Rose, and all the other POC characters being shoved to the sidelines, I made this loading screen pack to bring them back to the forefront. This is where I, or we if y'all feel so inclined to join me, celebrate their characters and their amazing performances. I have included some of the fan favorites as well, because we can not forget Chewie and the best droids of all time, word to R2D2. But make no mistake, those "side characters" are now the stars of this show...pack. This is not about their main characters, but OURS.
There are 60 screens in this pack to choose from. Previews are included in the download links. Enjoy!
